The Rock - Ayers Kaserne

I have a personal blog and one of the most visited pages on that site is a post I wrote about my time at Ayers Kaserne, better know to those who lived there as "The Rock". I was attached to C Company 2nd Battalion, 36th Infantry. We were part of the 3rd Armored Division. I was at the Rock from 1983 through August of 1985.
I recently had the chance to connect with some Army buddies from my unit and I know that there are many more out there who would like to do the same. I hope that over time, this site is a way to help others find old friends. We shared some trying yet incredible times together while stationed in Germany. We served during the tense final years of the Cold War and I think that like me, you probably remember the fun you had with friends more than early morning alerts and digging foxholes.
I'd like to share this site with others. If you have a story to tell or a topic you'd like to see, please contact me. Send pictures and copies of memorabilia as well.

  5. Going to try again my first attempt must of went outer space.Arrived at 3rd plt C2/36 Inf Feb 81 and admit that I really hated it, the moral really sucked all around.Things started changing when our new plt Sgt Sfc Summersell rotated in a few months later.Things got better, myself, sgt Lemke and sgt Tuitasi got our E6 strips in the same promotion ceremony . For an peacetime army we were trained well, maxed everything we done. Did the space shuttle mission security force to where if the shuttle should have to make an emergency landing on our side of the world we would hop on planes and be there, had ran miles and forced marched miles 4 to 5 times a week for months prior to the mission. I took over the Redeye section when they were transitioning over to the Stinger missile system in Jun of 82, the worst thing that I did in the 9 year sling in the army, should of stayed infantry. Didn,t mix well with the ADA. Anyways left HHC 2/36th Jan 84. Hate it so bad that the "ROCK" is gone.

  6. W. Tony Russell stationed on the Rock from 1978 through 1981. first duty stationed and hated it. I thought all of the Army was like that. Those damn alerts zero dark thirty just coming from the club in Wetzlar. Oh what fun it was back in my youth. Oh I was in HHC 2-36inf. Cpt Frank Stone was the CO. My 1SG was George Horvath in whom I've learned alot from.

  8. Tony , I guess that you was leaving when I got there, was suppose to be there in 80 but due to my re-enlistment terms got an addition year at Campbell. 1SG Horvath had to of been our SGT Major late 81 or 82, pretty sharp, he got transferred down south and went far, my memory isn't as good to were he went. Full bird Gordan Sullivan was the man and he went to Army Chief of Staff. Lt Col Davis was Bn Com and Lt Col JJ Johnson replaced him,You had to been in on the first 100 mile road march thru history. I had actually enjoyed my in 81,Didn't see much different in mech Inf and Straight legged or Air Assault except for all the extra maint of the tracks and M50s. Once you're on the ground you all are straight legged. You mentioned Wetzlar, me and Sgt Lemke were rock and rollers and he talked me into going to the Why Not club , said we would save money and thumb a ride, said he done it all the time, well we walked the whole way, dark when we got there, people just blew their horns and waved. Was also glad to leave but don't know if we made the right choice in closing and tearing down the Rock, only time will tell.

Never had thought a lot about it until the last several years but am proud to be a cold war vet that I feel we kept watch and kept the machine ready for today,s soldiers. The space shuttle mission was rare and was glad to be a part of it.

    1. Hope that all is well ,I knew Larry for around an year from HHC 2/36th ,most likely he was first assigned C2/36th as he was Redeye air defense. The Redeye section which changed to the Stinger section around late 82 consisted of 5 sergeants,5 drivers and 5 jeeps. Each section served a battalion,( 500 troops) once the Bn was deployed each jeep provided overlapping air defense for area,s which would have the 5 jeeps separated for miles, pretty much out there on your own.Larry definitely knows his stuff as a soldier, could glance at far away friendly or enemy aircraft and could give you its name.We went to Frankfurt one weekend and we went to these disco bars (I,am white)with no problems, had a great time.I always believed that i was a fast runner all i can say is that he smoked me.

  16. My name is Stephen Tiebout and my tour of duty was entirely spent at Ayers Kaserne, 1975 to 1977. My MOS was 11Echo but when I arrived at The Rock I was assigned to the HQ company with one of the armored batalions. I was the S-2 intelligence clerk and also responsible for a 577 personal carrier. The M577 wss probably phased-out not much later, I'm guessing.
My experience was positive in the old West Germany. For sure there was the daily grind as well as the maneuvers at Graf, Wildflecken and of course who can forget the annual Reforger exercises! But I played hard as well: I joined that German/American friendship club "Kontakt" and made some grest friendships. Don't know where most of my buddies are now. Would love to hear from Blair Prichard and Robert Stevens. My email is srtiebout@gmail. com. Took leave with them to visit England and Amsterdam over Christmas 1975. Amsterdam was amazing - best hash in Europe! I had a 1970 mustang convertible and had a blast with it on the autobahn!
I can't believe how the years have slipped by; marriages, grown children, career. Dust in the wind, so the song goes. But I will never forget about bring young and being the tip of the spear, camped-out in the forest overlooking the city of Fulda, defending our way of life during The Cold War.
    Peace, brothers!

  17. 22 years ago I met a SP5 Moore that was stationed at HHC 2/36th with me in Corbin Ky off !-75 at a truck stop, he is from Texas and said that he only drove the east coast every 2 to 3 years. While at HHC knew a Billy Joe Brown from around the Nashville area, got to talking asked where I was from, some of his family was from my hometown went to school with his cousin who said recently he passed on. Know another Glen Carnes who lives less then a mile from me had the same room at charlie company across from the rec center, he had left 4 years prior to my arrival.Another friend Micheal Burchfield was one of the last details there back and forth on deployments said that tumbleweeds where blowing around when he left. I have met a few others mostly way before my time there.Goes to show how small the world really is.

  24. My name is Darius Perry. I was assigned to Charlie Company 2/33 Armor, 3rd Armor Division from 1983 - 1985. We eventually became a cohort unit and the whole unit relocated to Ft. Hood, Texas, 1st Cavalry Division. We spent many days railheading to Graff and Hoenfel. It was definitely a place to remember. Our barracks was off the main road on the right side across from theater. We walked to the tank park everyday after running the perimeter for PT. I hope to travel back there.

  28. I was in CSC 2-36, 1978 to 1981.

Worked in Commo, a 11b in a 31V slot, eventually picked up 31v as my official secondary.

When I first saw the “Rock” I thought they had made a mistake and were taking me to a prison. I could not believe such a decrepit looking place was a military base.

But after a while I loved it (or got used to it) and Loved Germany.

Drug use was heavy at the time, when people went to drug counseling it was a platoon sized formation.

The only time I ever saw heroin was there, after watching my room mates shoot up and then having to rolling them on to there sides so they would not die in there own vomit. I swore off drugs.

But the night life in Frankfort was something to remember.
OF course I drank Jack and coke like it was free ( no saint here).
It was my most memorable post. It was not that long after Vietnam and the Army had trouble getting enough bodies to fill the ranks, so they put up with a lot.

i'll drink one to you guys later on.

  29. I shipped my wife and new baby over, as soon as I sold my convertable. We first lived in 71, right outside the post, in a two story home built in the 16th century, next to a graveyard. There was too much mold, so we moved tookl Gone months later. We traveled in a 63 Volkswagen all over Europe, whenever I could get time off from being battery clerk and FDC,
